Around 50 cars have been marked with what seems to be blood from a person in the Germany's town of Hanau close to Frankfurt, police confirm authorities.
Vehicles, building surfaces and mailboxes were vandalized, occasionally with prohibited symbols, they reported in a official communication.
Law enforcement state they were alerted late on Wednesday, when a man observed that a vehicle in the Lamboy neighborhood of Hanau had been covered with a red-colored substance.
The substance had been drawn in the pattern of a Nazi symbol, they added.
Law enforcement then located multiple other smeared vehicles and house walls in the surrounding area.
Swastikas are banned in Germany under regulations banning the public exhibition of symbols from the Nazi era.
Officials say preliminary tests show the fluid was probably blood from a person.
"Currently there is no indication as to its source; officials are currently not aware of any injuries in relation with the occurrence," they commented.
City officials stated they were attempting "to resolve the mystery" and have requested to the public for tips.
A senior representative stated the incident rendered him speechless and had to be resolved promptly.
"This act affects the center of Hanau and reopens the trauma of the extremist attack in 2020," he wrote on online, referring to the murder of nine victims by a assailant targeting individuals of migrant background in five years prior.
