The US monetary authority reduced borrowing costs on Wednesday, marking the second reduction this year during financial volatility originating from the government closure and trade duties.
Move Arrives at Unprecedented Moment for Federal Reserve
The move to cut the key rate by a 0.25% to a range of 3.75% to 4% arrives at an unprecedented moment for the central bank. The institution has been under immense pressure to cut rates despite ongoing price increases.
Fed Statement Notes Job Market Changes
In a announcement, the Federal Reserve stated that the jobless rate had increased but remains low. “Employment growth have decelerated,” the release reads. “Inflation has moved up and stays somewhat elevated.”
Government Shutdown Complicates Central Bank’s Task
The continuing government stoppage, now one of the longest in US history, has also hindered the central bank’s task. Collection of important financial statistics has been suspended without a timeline as employees at the Bureau of Labor Statistics are on leave during the shutdown.
Data Gap Affects Policy Decisions
The Federal Reserve usually analyzes labor statistics to determine labor market conditions, such as the count of new jobs added to the market and the present jobless percentage. The last jobs report was released in the beginning of last month, before the closure, and gave a somewhat gloomy snapshot of the employment scene in the previous month.
The figure of positions created to the economy in the summer month was lower by more than 100,000 since the spring, and joblessness rose to four point three percent – the peak since 2021.
Alternative Reports Show Continued Slowdown
Though the bureau was set to publish September’s employment data in early October, it suspended its publication when the shutdown started. Employment data company a leading payroll processor indicated earlier this month that the business segment cut thirty-two thousand positions in last month, a sign that the job market is continuing to slow.
“Both the supply and demand for labor has declined quite sharply,” central bank head the Fed chairman said recently, a trend he had earlier attributed stems from trade and immigration measures.
Price Data Reveals Gradual Increase
Though BLS’s employment data has been suspended, the agency still released its price statistics for last month that showed that costs are going up, albeit gradually. Costs increased three percent over the last year, the peak since January. In spring, the yearly price increase was two point three percent, the minimum it has been since 2021. The central bank’s goal inflation rate is two percent.
