Balloons carrying thousands of packs of cigarettes have caused flight disruptions in Lithuania, as Lithuania's primary air hub was compelled to shut down for hours when numerous of them floated into the national airspace.
Air Travel Interruptions
The temporary shutdown led to 30 flight cancellations disrupting 6,000 passengers, with authorities cautioning that further disruptions were possible throughout Monday.
Law Enforcement Actions
Border security stated that 25 meteorological balloons were detected entering Lithuania from neighboring Belarus, with two balloons ending up right above the main terminal.
Up to 14 of the meteorological devices sent during the weekend floated over the capital region, which is the location of Lithuania's capital city and close to the Belarusian boundary.

At least 11 balloons transporting 18,000 packs of contraband smoking materials have since been recovered, though more recoveries are anticipated, according to law enforcement authorities.
Regional Smuggling Pattern
Despite the disruption, authorities noted that "Meteorological equipment transporting smuggled items - Belarusian smoking products - are nothing new in Lithuania, Latvia, and Poland."
So far this year, numerous meteorological balloons have been recorded entering Lithuania from Belarus, while approximately 966 had been documented the previous year.
Neighboring Country Impact
Meanwhile, the border area of Poland, which similarly neighbors Belarus, has documented over one hundred incidents in which illegal goods were transported from its adjacent country employing the weather devices.
Criminal Methodology
When questioned about why smugglers utilize a method that is particularly vulnerable to weather conditions rather than simpler to operate drones, officials clarified that "Weather devices are basic instruments used by illegal traders - they are cheaper than drones for carrying smoking materials from Belarus."
Security Service Goals
Officials added that "The goal of law enforcement is to seize the largest possible quantities of contraband and to apprehend coordinators and perpetrators so that such operations become unprofitable and present no risk to civil aviation."
European Tensions
Such border infiltrations occur during a period of heightened tension in Europe following various aerial device infiltrations that have created aviation problems across European nations.
Similar occurrences in neighboring countries have prompted European leaders to speed up talks about improving airspace protection throughout the continent.
